The AME’s are the men behind the sophisticated flying machine.
Each aircraft is required to be certified for its fitness for flight before
being accepted by the pilot for a take-off. This certification is
required to be carried out by a person who has been specifically
trained to inspect and evaluate the safety and airworthiness aspect
of the aircraft and its system. Thus, an AME is expected to be a
dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled professional. Infect, the lives
of the passengers and crew on board an aircraft vests in the hands of
an AME. Having been required to perform such responsible tasks, the
Government of India in concurrence with the International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO) has entrusted the Director General of
Civil Aviation (D.G.C.A.) under Ministry of Civil Aviation to issue
‘LICENCES’ to these Aviation engineers (AME’s). Only a Licensed AME
is authorized to certify the airworthiness of an aircraft. In order
to obtain a License, a potential AME is expected to undergo an
approved AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING COURSE after completing his
10+2/Intermediate course and fulfilling specific laid down
requirements prescribed by the DGCA. While undergoing the approved
curriculum he/she is subjected to a set of examinations, which are
conducted by the DGCA upon the qualification of the same he is issued
with a BASIC LICENSE. Thereafter a student is exposed to the real life
aviation maintenance environment, with an airline or an Aircraft
Maintenance Organisation, where he /she obtains a TYPE LICENSE. It is
here that he/she is nurtured to graduate as a technical doctor for
the AIRCRAFT, its engines, systems etc.
Skill and professionalism is infused only upon experience and
exposure. An AME therefore exposes himself/herself to several such
aircrafts, engines or systems and extends his/her scope of license to
cover various types of aeroplanes. Thus, is the way of increasing his
qualification, skills and market demand through which one goes up the
ladder of success in this vast field of Aviation. There goes a saying
‘AME’s are not born, they are made’.
Hence, a student with an average academic background could as
well be crafted into a specialized AME if he has within him, the 3D’s
dedication, discipline and dynamism.
HOW TO BECOME AN AME?
A student meeting the stipulated academic requirement laid down by
DGCA, undergoes the 3 years training at an approved AME training
school and thereafter obtains On-The Job Training while continuing to
pass the LICENSE exams conducting by DGCA. It is pertinent to note
that the AME training course conducted at our Institute is as per
ICAO Type II standards and hence is valid internationally for graduating
as an AME. A career as an AME offers excellent pay, benefits &
growth opportunities with ample chances to go abroad.
In our endeavor to nurture the right kind of technical manpower to
meet the challenges of the changing & progressively developing
field of Aviation Science & technology, IIAS is pushing
continuous effort to provide the right ambience for such an advanced
professional training. The is achieved by setting up specific
technical sections each displaying a detailed study environment to
understand the technology & maintenance concepts of the various
aviation stream viz. AIRFRAMES, SHOP, PISTON ENGINE SHOP, JET ENGINE
SHOP, INSTRUMENT & ELECTRICAL SHOP, COMPUTER LAB etc. The
training is complemented by a well-equipped library and a reading room,
which has a collection of a wide range of aviation technical
publications, books reference materials, manufacturers bulletins,
journal, aviation magazines for its students. There is a library of
video aids and computer based training technique is also widely
followed.
Besides the classrooms and practical sessions, students are taken in
frequent study tours to industries aviation maintenance Organisation
& Airlines for a exposure to the actual maintenance activities.
