BOOMING AVIATION INDUSTRY: The
Changing Scenario In Aviation; Aircraft Maintenance Engineering,
and Its Future Growth Potential
Indian air transport industry is on the rise with the emergence of
new airlines and the national carrier like Air India & Indian
Airlines gearing up to take the tough competition ahead. In fact, the
success of the aviation industry is an integral part of the nation’s
economic development & social progress.
The rapid growth in air travel is revealed by the statistics that
with the introduction of Apex fares by the airlines, they have seen
more than 20% growth year on year. With the entry of low fare-no frill
airlines viz. Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines, AIR INDIA Charters
Ltd., Spice Jet etc. and their affordable rates, are bound to
increase the number of air passengers community day by day. Viewing
the tremendous potential of the industry several international
players have shown interest to participate in this shining sector.
The recent decision of the government to open up the skies and
increasing the air connectivity – both within the country & with
the outside world, has prompted several private domestic airlines to
operate in the profitable international routes as well.
With an increase in the number of airlines and its fleet size
the field of Aviation Maintenance would also grow in a proportionate
manner. Says Mr. G.R. Gopinath, CEO, Air Deccan, ‘while India
had been exporting Aviation Maintenance engineers & technicians
now we are requiring to imports engineers & pilots to meet our
demand which leads to higher costs’. Further he says ‘Having
maintenance centre for the aircraft within the country can
tremendously bring down the cost & ‘down time’ of aircraft’. Thus
we conclude that India
has bright chances & the potential to be a hub of aviation
activities with aviation maintenance as core areas. As per industry
sources Mr. Kapil Kaul, Regional Representative & Vice President
of Sydney based Centre of Asia Pacific Aviation says ‘the airlines
will stimulate the market & create passenger growth. There is an
estimate of Indian carriers to buy 200 new aircraft by the end of
2005 – 2006. This would lead to a shortage of around 1000 aircraft engineers’,
which reflects upon the fact that the aviation market is poised for a
tremendous growth and there exists a potential demand in its core
wing i.e., Aviation Maintenance Engineering.
Every aircraft for it’s day to day maintenance & safe operation
requires Aircraft Maintenance Engineers & Technicians. No
aircraft can undertake flight unless & until it is certified Safe
& Airworthy for operation by an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer
licensed by the Director General of Civil Aviation, Government of
India.
The need & demand of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in the
Aviation Industry is much more than their availability. This huge gap
between the demand & supply of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in
the Aviation sector contributes to it’s being one of the highest paid
jobs in India
& abroad. An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer starts with a salary
of Rs. 20-40 thousand, which goes up to Rs. 1.5-2 lakhs in the prime
of their career. There is a lack of awareness among the younger
generation in this field, which needs to be rectified for the
prosperity & better prospects of the youth of today.
